The Best U.S. Cities for Mermaids
If mermaids were searching for the perfect place to call home, not every beach town would make the cut. While warm waters and abundant marine life are important, the best destinations also offer thriving coastal ecosystems, plenty of underwater biodiversity, and a little mermaid magic in local culture.
Our analysis ranked coastal cities across multiple factors to determine which destinations are the most mermaid-friendly, and which may leave even the most adventurous sea dweller looking elsewhere.
Santa Barbara, California, is the best U.S. city for mermaids, earning an overall score of 71.0 out of 100. The city combines ideal coastal conditions with exceptional marine biodiversity, including 187 recorded fish species, one of the highest totals in our study. It also experiences a water temperature difference of just 5.1°F throughout the year, meaning mermaids wouldn’t have to adapt to dramatic seasonal changes.
Rockport, Texas, finishes a close second with a score of 70.9. The city boasts the warmest average August water temperature in the country at 88.8°F, making it an ideal destination for mermaids who prefer tropical waters. It also has some of the fewest scuba instructors, meaning more privacy for the mermaids swimming around. Jacksonville Beach, Florida, San Diego, California, and Virginia Beach, Virginia round out the top five. Each destination offers a strong mix of favorable ocean temperatures, boating opportunities, marine biodiversity, and coastal recreation that helps them earn high overall scores.
San Diego ranks #4 overall and stands out as one of the country’s richest underwater habitats, ranking first for marine biodiversity with 259 recorded fish species. That’s more than three times the average city we analyzed, which has just under 80 unique species. The city also has the most surf shops in the study, symbolizing a vibrant beach culture and inviting less suspicion for mystical mermaids. In a beach town used to seeing surfers, swimmers, and all kinds of ocean activity, where people are constantly in and around the water, a mysterious tail splashing offshore is less likely to raise eyebrows.
Ocean Springs, Mississippi, leads the nation in mermaid enthusiasm. The city earned a perfect search interest score of 100, followed closely by Virginia Beach (99) and Eureka, California (87), suggesting these destinations are home to some of America’s biggest mermaid fans. Eureka also has the fewest boat rentals, posing little threat to mermaid safety and security.
Warm Gulf Coast waters dominate the rankings for ocean temperature. Alongside Rockport, Key West (88.7°F), St. Pete Beach (88.6°F), Fort Lauderdale (88.0°F), and Clearwater (87.8°F) recorded the warmest average August water temperatures in the study.
Not every beach town proved to be mermaid-friendly. Long Beach, New York, ranked last with an overall score of 30.8, followed by Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey (38.7) and Fort Lauderdale, Florida (42.3). While each offers access to the coast, they scored lower across the combination of environmental and recreational factors included in our ranking.

Methodology
In order to find the best U.S. cities for mermaids, we started with a list of 75 of the largest coastal towns across the U.S. From there, we analyzed 12 unique ranking factors: the average number of sunny days per year, average number of inches of rain per year, average high temperature in the summer, average low temperature in the winter, number of scuba instructors, number of surf shops, number of boat rentals, average water temperature in August, average difference in water temperature throughout the year, number of unique fish species, number of fisherman, and mermaid search interest.
We assigned cities with a score of zero to five for each factor, with a score of five representing the most favorable conditions for mermaids. We determined each city’s total score from the combination of its individual factor scores, which were weighted according to their impact on mermaids. Individual factor scores were then added together to give each city a final score from zero to 100. Higher scores indicate cities are better for mermaids.
