Sushi wasn’t always eaten fresh.

Before refrigeration, sushi began as a way to preserve fish by storing it in fermented rice. Over time, the process shifted toward eating it fresh, eventually becoming the sushi we know today.

Ramen isn’t as ancient as you might think.

Instant ramen was invented in Japan in 1958 by Momofuku Ando. Today, it’s one of the world’s top comfort foods, with billions of servings eaten each year.

✎ Prompt: Use unexpected color to create a new flavor of ramen. Think about when you might eat this ramen. Is it for dessert, a breakfast dish, or just a new take on dinner?

Lollipops are named after a racehorse.

In the early 1900s, a candy maker named his hard candies on sticks after the famous racehorse Lolly Pop. The name stuck like sugar on a stick, with it officially being trademarked in 1931.

The cheeseburger is an American invention.

The first cheeseburger is believed to have been served in Pasadena, California, but it was a restaurant owner in Louisville, Kentucky who trademarked the name in 1935.

Bacon and eggs became a popular American breakfast combo thanks to advertising.

In the 1920s, a marketing campaign pushed bacon-and-eggs as the “hearty American breakfast,” and it quickly stuck as tradition.
