Quick Tips and Tricks

Have you ever wanted to give an object a rainbow gradient instead of a solid color fill in Procreate? Well, you can. And it’s not as complicated as it looks.

Alien coloring sheet with colorful gradient

Using the Alien in Flying Saucer Waving Hi From Space coloring page, this technique was used to create a rainbow plaid background. We’ll show you how the process was done, plus give you ideas for other ways to apply this tutorial.

Making Gradient Reveals in Procreate

Gradients are perfect for when you want your art to have have smooth color transitions, whether it’s an ombre look or the whole rainbow spilling out of the crayon box.

Colorful gradient pattern

Using gradients and clipping masks, we can reveal that gradient on the objects where we want it to show.

Step-by-Step Instructions

To make the rainbow plaid background:

  1. On one layer, fill your page making three vertical stripes of different colors.
  2. Apply Gaussian Blur to the layer so the colors blend together.
  3. Add a new layer.
  4. On this layer, create a stripe pattern that goes across the page. Ensure you are leaving blank space between each stripe.
  5. Tap on your gradient layer, then tap Clipping Mask.
  6. Repeat the same steps above, except make your gradient go across and your stripe pattern go up and down.
  7. Optional: Set your clipping mask layer’s Blend Mode to Screen.

Your two sets of revealed gradients will look like this in your Procreate layers.

Troubleshooting

If you’re running into issues, double check that your gradient layer is above your stripe layer when you set it as a clipping mask.

Other Ways to Use Gradient Reveals

Patterns aren’t the only way to use this technique. Practice with other objects like a mermaid tail or an apple, or even typography and hand lettering.
