Quick Tips and Tricks

Do you know about the Alpha Lock function in Procreate? It helps keep your work clean and is easy to turn on and off. It take no time to learn, so not only will you end up using it on your next ballerina sheet, you’ll probably end up using it in all your future projects.

Using Alpha Lock in Procreate

Alpha Lock is like putting a forcefield around the edges of your layer. Enabling it allows you to color on only the layer’s existing positive space.

Say you’ve filled in a shape, like a flower petal in the screenshot below. Now you want to add shading to the petal, but you don’t want to clean up stroke marks that go off the edge of the petal. With Alpha Lock on, anything you add to the layer stays contained within the shape.

Alpha lock in Procreate

For example, you can see Alpha Lock turned on in the pink layer in the screenshot above. Now when adding texture over that pink petal, the lines stay only within the confines of the petal.

Layer without Alpha Lock

The pink petal has Alpha Lock on, while the orange layer does not. There are no boundaries set so the color is free to go exactly where you lay it down. With Alpha Lock on, you don’t need to worry about erasing errant scribble marks.

Step-by-Step Instructions

To enable Alpha Lock on a layer, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the layer you want to work on.
  2. Tap Alpha Lock to enable it.
  3. To turn it off, simply tap Alpha Lock again.

Using Alpha Lock is a simple step you can take in your coloring process to work efficiently and keep your layers clean.
