Quick Tips and Tricks

I was coloring the Water Fairy in Procreate, which you can watch here, and was having a lot of fun with the color palette and styling of her dress. But it was a last minute suggestion from my son that really tied the piece together: pixie dust! (I suppose I was too focused on the fashion that I forgot the magic. Oops.)

Adding Pixie Dust in Procreate

To create pixie dust in Procreate, experiment with any stippling brush available in your Brush Library. If your brush doesn’t naturally vary in opacity, play around with the opacity slider. Sometimes you might opt to use multiple Layers at varying opacities to get the look just right.

Of course, you can also purchase a stippling brush that has all the features built in so you can get your pixie dust just right without a big fuss. There’s no wrong way to do it!

Close up of sparkles on fairy's wings

Here’s a close up view of the pixie dust around her wings and hair. I like how the sparkle adds that little bit of much-needed magic to a fairy coloring page.

Adding Pixie Dust By Hand

If you prefer to color by hand and want to create a similar effect, using glitter gel pens works well here. If you want to go full force on the glitter, the Pentel Sparkle Pop pens are your best friend. Just use a similar stippling technique to get the individual dots of pixie dust.
