Butterflies have long been symbols of transformation, especially in art and literature. You might have first encountered this symbolism as a child in Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The theme of transformation goes even further back, appearing in ancient Greek mythology, where the goddess Psyche was depicted with butterfly wings. We, too, are paying homage to these beautiful creatures with our collection of free butterfly coloring pages. So download your faves, grab your colored pencils, and transform these butterflies into your own work of art!

Our butterfly coloring pages are perfect for kids and adults because they provide enjoyment at any skill level. These hand drawn illustrations feature simple butterfly line art, kawaii stylings, and even an illustration of a playful cat chasing the butterflies in the garden.

Quick Tips and Tricks
Creating a cohesive color palette is one of the easiest ways to give your artwork a polished and intentional feel. Whether you’re going for dark and moody or bright and happy, the right palette sets the tone for your entire piece.
For this illustration, a Procreate color palette was created from a photo of a warmly lit Tokyo alley at night. The haze of the lights against the colorful signage of the shops and restaurants had an earthiness that felt perfect for a butterfly’s wings.

You don’t always have to start from scratch though. Tools like Sarah Renae Clark’s Color Cube offer curated palette ideas, which is great for building into your workflow or using as a tool to get out of a creative rut.
No matter how you choose your colors, Procreate makes it easy to organize and reuse your favorite palettes. Here’s how to create your own in just a few taps.
